About the Conversions & Palettes

Proprietary Colors (Pantone): These are commercial color systems that rely on licensed lookup tables, not direct mathematical formulas. This tool contains a small sample of colors. If a conversion from RGB/HEX doesn't match a known color in its limited database, it will display "n/a" (not available).

Color Models (HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV): Conversions between these models are based on standardized mathematical formulas. They provide different ways to represent the same color. For example, RGB is hardware-oriented (for screens), while HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) is more intuitive for human perception.

Converting to RAL and NCS Color Systems

To convert colors to RAL and NCS color systems, you can use the following online resources:

CMYK Conversion: Converting from an additive color model (RGB for screens) to a subtractive one (CMYK for print) is not exact, as the range of displayable colors (gamut) is different. This tool uses two common formulas:

  • Standard UCR (Under Color Removal): This is a widely used formula that calculates the black component (K) first and then adjusts Cyan (C), Magenta (M), and Yellow (Y) accordingly. It generally produces richer blacks and saves ink during printing.
  • Simple: A more direct, naive conversion that can sometimes result in a "flatter" appearance by using a different method to calculate the color components. Use the switcher above to see the difference.

Palette & Shade Generation:

  • Number of Shades: This control generates a specified number of colors evenly distributed between 0% and 100% for either Luminance (brightness) or Saturation (color intensity). This creates a perfect gradient from black/white or grayscale to the most vivid version of your chosen color.
  • Step Value: This control generates shades by adding or subtracting a fixed percentage from your base color's Luminance or Saturation, moving outwards until it reaches the 0% and 100% limits. This is useful for finding adjacent, harmonious colors.
  • 10-90% Shades & Tints: This generates a gradient from your selected color to black (shades) and to white (tints) in 10% steps. This is useful for design work requiring darker and lighter variations of your base color, emulating the mixing of ink with black or white.

Conversion Method References

¹ CustOber25a/b: Custom selection of values specifically calibrated for Obermoser branding. It is based on 2025 labels with a slight simulation of warmer darker tones expected in wine shops, restaurants, and homes. So to simulate lower Kelvin values and more orange/yellow hue, increased saturation and lower luminance (darker). This conversion method is maintained separately even when its hex values match external sources, as it may undergo independent tweaking for brand-specific requirements.
² Combined Sources: A combination of PerBang, iColorpalette, hex-to-rgb, and britishcolours. These sources agree on the same hex value for each Pantone color. This combined approach provides greater reliability as multiple independent sources confirm the same color values.
³ hextoral: Values from hextoral.com, specializing in Pantone to RAL Design conversions. This source sometimes provides different hex values compared to the combined sources, offering an alternative conversion perspective.
Future Reference Logic: When adding new conversion sources in the future, if a source agrees with the existing "Combined Sources" hex value, it will be incorporated into the combined group. If it provides a different hex value, it will be added as a separate conversion method with its own reference number. This approach maintains clarity while accommodating diverse conversion perspectives.

Color Precision: HEX offers 16.7 million unique colors (full 24-bit color) without decimals, providing high precision. HSL using integer values (0-360 for hue, 0-100% for saturation/lightness) defines significantly fewer unique colors (around 3.5 million) due to inherent redundancies and a less granular system for representing all possible shades. Adding one decimal place to HSL values would theoretically allow it to map the entire 16.7 million color HEX (24-bit sRGB) space with high precision. However, software like Inkscape's primary HSL input fields often only support integer values, which significantly limits its practical color definition precision compared to HEX.
